Big Nate: Payback Time — Review & Giveaway

Thought for the Day:

“Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it.”
~ Steve Jobs ~

It’s always good to have some twists and turns in your stories. Kristin Lamb has a post HERE that can help you build some good plots twists.

I don’t see a lot of good posts on Setting. Jeffrey Phillips has a guest post HERE on Fiction University that should help with making your setting all it can be.

Big NateI have long been a fan of Lincoln Peirce and his Big Nate books. They are a fun break from the more intense reading I need to do for my reviews. When the latest — Big Nate:Payback Time — showed up on the list of available books from the Manhattan Book Review, I grabbed it. Here is the review I wrote for them.

Big Nate, it seems, has developed a terrible allergy to his social studies teacher, the dreaded Mrs. Godfrey. An allergy with sneezing, coughing, watery eyes, and spots on his face. Principal Nichols is on the case and soon discovers it’s not Mrs. Godfrey who is causing Nate’s reaction, unfortunately for Nate. So life goes on as per usual for Nate, with Timber Scout calendar sales (Chad is the unlikely hero), Nate tooting his own horn in the soccer goal, and while he is writing for the school newspaper, interesting ideas for livening up science class, and an afternoon training a newbie in the ways of detention — on which Big Nate has profound knowledge. But Big Nate’s love life takes center stage often and culminates in a challenge to an after-school fight.

Lincoln Peirce

A new Big Nate book is always welcome news for the middle-grade set, and this will be no exception. Lincoln Peirce has a wicked sense of humor and is fully in touch with his inner child. There isn’t really a storyline through this book. It’s more like a collection of comic vignettes, but it will keep youngsters busy reading and happy.

  1. I really enjoyed the post on plot twists. I’ve book-marked it. Meanwhile, you mentioned you don’t see many posts on setting. I’m going to a workshop on setting this Saturday. I’ll bring any notes to Sunday’s meeting that seem interesting.

  2. I’ve always enjoyed the humor from the Big Nate books. Don’t know that I could write about a character for such a long time (More than 40 books I’m sure). Mr. Peirce does it well.
I enjoyed the extra time I had today to read your links. I’m in the middle of a new story I’m writing and the tips on setting and characters were very timely. Hope you have a super fun summer planned.
