I always thought John Steinbeck was really the master of character naming. I could write a thesis on his character names. Seriously. But I ran across an excellent article about naming that doesn’t even mention Steinbeck. HERE you go.

WildfireI really love survivor stories, so I always keep my eyes open for them. When I ran across Wildfire by Rodman Philbrook on the review list for the San Francisco Book Review, I was excited and claimed it. I am really glad I did. It is a terrific survivor story. Here is the review I wrote for SFBR.

Twelve-year-old Sam is at camp in the Maine woods while his mother is in rehab. Sam knows how hard it is for her, so when the camp is being evacuated under threat of a wildfire, he knows he has to have his phone to stay in touch with her. When he runs back to the cabin to get it, he is left behind. He starts hiking away from the fire and finds an abandoned lumber camp and an old Jeep. Fortunately, his late father taught him enough, so he can make it work. He finds another left-behind camper, Delphy, and she goes with him. They have a harrowing journey, with dangers and surprises around every corner.

Rodman Philbrick has written an action-packed, highly intense, and timely novel that will keep kids (and the rest of us!) turning pages to the very end. The characters are believable, the setting terrific, and the writing lively. Back-matter gives real perspective to the story with information on the impact of climate change, a short history of the 1947 fire in Maine, and survival tips for this tinder-dry world we live in. Don’t miss this one.

  2. I can’t even imagine the terror of being caught on the wrong side of a big wildfire! This sounds like a truly excellent book and I’ll keep my eyes open for it, but will pass on the giveaway since I’ve recently won several books in various places and fallen behind on my reading.   3. This book sounds like a ‘must read’ for kids and adults. With what has happened in my home state of California in the past couple of years regarding massive wildfires, this story definitely has an emotional appeal to me, too. I have bookmarked the post on writing historical fiction since that’s the genre I’m writing in for both my middle-grade and adult genre works in progress at the ‘present’ time. :0} Thanks for another terrific MMGM post, Rosi!

  6. I’m actually watching Survivor right now as I do love the survival stories. With the wildfires in CA and also in Australia, this book is timely. I shared on twitter, facebook, tumblr, and pinterest.
