COYOTE LOST AND FOUND — Review

Thought for the Day:

“There is something delicious about writing the first words of a story. You never quite know where they’ll take you.”

Gifts for My Writer Friends:

Excellent character description can add so much to a story. HERE Rebecca McClanahan, writing for Writer’s Digest, gives us 11 Secrets to Writing an Effective Character Description. Her examples are simply wonderful.

Trouble with titling? HERE is a great post on Writer Unboxed by Barbara Linn Probst called The Matter of Titles … Because Titles Matter. It’s very good.

If you are a picture book writer, you know just how important word choice is. HERE is a good article by Emma Walton Hamilton on The Power of Word Choice: Editing for Precision and Impact in Picture Books.

I am happy to report that Mango is settling in very well. She didn’t eat the first four days she was here. I had been told to be very careful about changing her food, but I realized she probably hadn’t eaten at the shelter either, so I took a chance and bought some wet food to mix with the kibble they gave me. She gobbled it right up and asked for more. Since then, she has settled right in and seems to be quite comfortable in her new digs. She met my daughter’s family and, although she is not as comfortable with men as women, she handled all of that well. The trainer will come this week to help teach her about the dog door and to walk with me without tripping me up. I made the right decision on this!

I have a whole lot of books that I have read and written reviews for that I haven’t yet featured here, but I am trying to get those reviews up. Maybe I will have to start doing two each time or something. Anyway, some of these have been out for a few months, but they are worthy of being featured. A couple years ago I read and loved THE REMARKABLE JOURNEY OF COYOTE SUNRISE by Dan Gemeinhart. You can see my review of that book HERE. Last spring I ran across a sequel — COYOTE LOST AND FOUND — and I was so excited to read it. I was not at all disappointed. It was like getting on a bus and finding an old friend to accompany you on the ride, and what a ride it is. And how could you resist that cover? Here is my review.

Coyote is having a hard time with her foray into actual school after five years of homeschooling as she and her dad, Rodeo, meandered around the country on a converted bus. She finds a box with her mother’s ashes, and at the same time, schools close due to Covid, so she and Rodeo decide a road trip is in order to take Mom’s ashes to where she’d wanted them scattered. That place is unknown because she had written it in a book that Coyote lost. But Coyote lets Rodeo think they are on a quest Mom had set up. They take Coyote’s best friend and Rodeo’s new girlfriend along. Coyote is on a secret quest to find the book, but can she find it, and will it give her the answers she needs?

Dan Gemeinhart

Anyone who read THE REMARKABLE JOURNEY OF COYOTE SUNRISE will be thrilled to find this sequel. Dan Gemeinhart has brought back the cast from that book to continue their delightful wandering ways. The writing is simply spectacular with smart, snappy dialogue, well-rounded characters, and a sweet, funny story that will keep all readers, middle-grade and up, happily turning pages. Coyote tells the story, and her voice is pitch-perfect for a seventh-grade girl. Do not miss this book!

  1. I’ve read several of Dan’s books including The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise. Dan has participated in our autor’s festival before. He is unassuming and a great guy.

      1. Oh, I meant to thank you for the book from your giveaway. The 50th anniversary of our author festival is happening this week, so it will be a welcome break to get back to some reading after that.

  2. Coyote Sunrise is almost perfect as a book and a character. I have been waiting to read the sequel. Thank you for a great review of the sequel. Your image of a bus with new friends resonates!

  3. I’m glad Mango is feeling more at home. She will forever be attached to you. I have not read the Coyote sequel, but it has been on my list for much too long. Your review is pushing me to move it to the top of my pile. The links all sound great, especially the first two. I will have time midweek to read each of them. Thanks for being a part of MMGM this week.

  4. I’m so happy Mango is adapting and you are becoming good friends. The Rachel Ray cover story made me laugh and my husband too when I told him. I have both of Dan’s books on my wish list and I know I will enjoy them.

  5. Really love that beautiful cover. The title reminded me of your first review. Coyote’s sequel is quite different — a mission to bury her mother’s ashes. That’s a first for me in MG books. Will have to read this series.

  6. So glad to hear Mango is settling in, she looks such a sweet little dog, and she’s also very lucky to find a home with you! I don’t read much contemporary but you make this book sound very appealing! Thanks for the recommendation and for the links!
